First Cup Match of Season ends in win for U17's
U17's come away from Clacton in the Cup with 50-0 Win
Having been drawn against Clacton in the First Round of the Cup, our Under 17's travelled to the Seaside on a balmy Autumn Sunday with unseasonal temperatures of about 23 degrees, and better than some of our Summer days.
This was new territory for us, having never met Clacton previously, so we weren't sure what to expect. We were given a warm welcome by the club.
In the first ten to fifteen minutes, Clacton showed themselves to be quite strong in the scrum and also defended well. It was evident that their backs were considerably weaker than ours, and once we got into our stride, the game started to flow, the passing amongst the back line was good, and we were able to exploit the wings on both sides, with Clacton really unable to find a match for our speed.
Final Score 50-0, but all credit to Clacton that they kept battling on and their heads didn't go down!
Unfortunately, as with so many grass root clubs, it became evident in a talk with their coach, post match, that they are really struggling for players. Ironically their strongest, and most experienced were in the forward pack. A couple of their backs had only just joined in the two weeks previously, and they had not had any preparation, with our meeting being their first proper match of the season.
In the circumstances, they acquitted themselves very well.
Well done to our lads for progressing to the next round.
