Out...But Not Down!
U17's Draw 24-24 in National Cup Round 3 - but go out on number of tries scored.
With the Fixture deemed unplayable on Brentwood pitches, we were hoping for postponement to Sunday 11th March as per RFU default date due to inclement weather.
However, Bishops Stortford had managed to source a 3G pitch at Shelford, and so we saw ourselves travelling up to Cambridge, without full home support, on a pitch surface untested by us, and playing as a truly U17's side, against an U18's Colts side a year ahead of time.
It was evident from the outset that Bishops Stortford had a very strong forward pack, and were dominating us in the scrums. However, we were not outdone overall by their physicality or fitness. Our defending was good and we were getting some hard tackles in, but the
first BS try came from a break. and the second from a mistake. BS 14-0 up after about 10 mins. The third BS try came following sustained pressure. At half time, we had pulled back a try and went in 19-7 down. The second started far better for us, and we started to get our passing going amongst the backs. Brentwood converted a penalty - 19-10, we then crossed the line again shortly after, score 19-17. BS scored a further try but failed to convert -24-17. We kept battling away, and our desire to win paid dividends. With the final 5 minutes on the clock, we scored and converted to level the score at 24-24.
At first, we believed we had won this, but our hopes were dashed, and celebrations a bit premature, when we we realised that the rules state, in the event of a tie, the result is decided on.....number of tries scored.
Result: BS 4 - Brentwood 3
Very well done though Lads! Did yourselves and the Club proud. We'll be ready for all comers next season, when we'll actually be playing as Colts.
U17's League Title and Essex Cup here we come hopefully.
