In near perfect conditions for rugby Brentwood hosted bottom of the table Luton at King Georges on Saturday. The crowd were entertained to a 12 try feast of rugby which Director of Rugby Steve Killington had demanded from his team.
The pitch which had been cause for concern in previous weeks had been worked on by Phil Guy and was in excellent shape for some entertaining running rugby.
Luton elected to play down the slope in the first half and the initial exchanges between the forwards indicated that it would be a very keenly contested match. Brentwood scored first with a cleverly worked try which saw Tom Simpson glide past the Luton defence to score beneath the post to allow Henry Bird to open his account for the afternoon. Luton gradually fought their way back into the match and Brentwood failed to clear their lines and the opposition took full advantage to crash over At this stage the match was drawn level but this was the last time that Luton would cross the Brentwood line.
Further first half tries from Declan Gillette, Adam Thomas and a conversion from Henry Bird saw Brentwood comfortably ahead at half time 19-7.
Immediately after half time Declan Gillette crashed over for his second try which was converted by Henry Bird to lead 26-7. Brentwood were in total domination and they completely outplayed a dispirited Luton side, the flood gates opened and tries from Tom King, Luke Green on his return to first team action after a long injury lay off, Joel Bevans -Royston, Nick Binet, and two tries each from Aaron Stanier and Henry Bird saw Brentwood record their highest ever league win at 72-7.
This win keeps Brentwood very much in touch with the top of the table, with no league game next week all eyes will now focus on the away game against Thurrock on 13th February, Steve Killington and his coaching team are aware of the significant challenges during the coming weeks but they firmly believe the team will be able to cope with whatever comes their way.
