Strong performance away to Eton Manor

Brentwood move up to 2nd place in the league with a strong performance away to Eton Manor at The New Wilderness in Redbridge. On paper this looked to be a tricky fixture for Brentwood, Eton Manor boasting the same win/loss record as the away side and fresh from a bonus points win over Diss the previous week. On the day, however, Brentwood had the 4 try bonus point secured within 20 minutes and dominated their opposition for the full 80 minutes.

Eton Manor took an early 3-0 lead with a long range penalty from a scrum infringement but 2 plays later Bradley Burr put Adam Thomas through a gap in midfield and he powered through 2 tacklers to score under the posts. Charlie Chambers then turned provider with a long pass to Chay Pollinger who beat 2 covering defenders to score. Both converted by chambers to move 3-14 ahead. Jack Richards then made 20 metres with a great break, off loaded to Josh Stannard who timed his pass perfectly for Charlie Wilkinson to take it at full pace and score out wide.
Unfortunately that was to be Wilkinson’s last play as he hobbled off soon after to be replaced by Tom Simpson. The next try came soon after, Bradley making 30 metres with a powerful run through the middle and Chay Pollinger finishing out wide from a lovely pass from Burr to score his 9th try in 4 games. Eton Manor scored against the run of play following a rare visit into the away team’s 22 but couldn’t convert. Tom Simpson finished nicely to reassert Brentwood’s dominance after lovely interplay between Josh Woodcock and Ben Amato with Chambers giving the final pass. 5 tries, 3 conversions into a strong breeze and Brentwood take a healthy lead into half time.

Half Time : Eton Manor 8 v 31 Brentwood

Full of confidence and with the breeze at their backs, Brentwood then put together a stunning 40 minutes of rugby both in attack and defence. James Killington gathered the restart and made good ground through Tijde Visser, Burr and Chambers combined down the blind side to put Josh Stannard in some space, he still had a bit to do but finished nicely.
Straight from the kick off, a great sniping run from Harry Chambers was stopped just short of the line and captain Woodcock scored for the second time in two weeks to bring up the half century of points for Brentwood. With Eton Manor’s defence being stretched again a lovely chip from Burr was gathered by Chambers and he sidestepped the last man to score try which he converted himself. Eton Manor had lost a man to the bin for a high tackle and it was the same infringement that gave Burr the chance to take a quick tap penalty and put Chambers away for his second of the match.
With time running out Matt Whaley made good ground and Simpson beat his man to score under the posts and with the successful conversion Chambers took his points haul to 26 and continue his fine scoring form this season.

Full time Eton Manor 8 -66 Brentwood

With the backs scoring most of the tries it would be easy to overlook the part played by the forwards, they dominated their opposition all game and gave the backs the opportunity to play on the front foot and show off what they can do with the space that opens up.

The Davlav Man of the Match went to Bradley Burr, great tactical kicking, strong in defence and opened up space for his backs all game. Brentwood need to carry this performance into next week’s tough fixture when North Walsham visit King Georges on Sat 4th November.

Brentwood Team: Visser, Richards, Bevans-Royston, Woodcock, Killington, Amato, Bessenger, Bradley, Chambers, Burr, Wilkinson, Thomas, Stannard, Pollinger, Chambers. Subs: Tilly, Whaley, Simpson
