Brentwood continue fine run with dominant performance away to Ruislip

Brentwood, eager to carry the momentum of last week’s win over Chingford, travelled to Middlesex to play a Ruislip side sitting mid table and fresh from an impressive away victory to Diss the week before. Brentwood rallied from going down within 2 mins to have the try bonus point secured within 25 minutes and score 7 tries in total in a mainly one sided fixture.

It didn’t start well for Brentwood, a penalty almost straight from the kick off gave the opposition fly half a kickable penalty which he duly converted. Brentwood weren’t phased by the setback and immediately put pressure on the Ruislip defensive line. Good hands and strong carries from Ben Amato and Jack Richards put Brentwood on the attack within the 22 metre line, a delicate chip from Bradley Burr was gathered by Josh Stannard and he won the collision with the goalpost to score under the posts, Henry Bird added the extras and Brentwood gained a lead they never relinquished. A fine team try was finished off powerfully by Charlie Wilkinson in the corner after good forward play and quick hands through the entire back line. 5 minutes later a Ruislip chip was intercepted by Tom Simpson and he sped half the length of the pitch to score, this was followed up by Bradley Burr delaying a pass to Wilkinson who had run a fantastic line to beat three defenders for his second try. A scrappy 5 minutes before halftime saw Ruislip capitalise on a dropped ball to score a nicely worked try to take the score at halftime to Ruislip 8 v 26 Brentwood.

The second half was a stop start affair, Brentwood at times put some wonderful play together and scored three good tries but with the referee’s whistle breaking up the play a little too often for the players and spectators liking there was no rhythm to the game. Ruislip briefly threatened to score with some powerful forward play but Brentwood defended well and cleared their lines. A lovely team move put Chay Pollinger into space out wide and he showed his finishing skills again to score out wide 2 minutes after coming on as a second half replacement. This was followed by the try of the game with Man of the Match Louis Payne taking the ball at pace 25 metres out and powering through 5 attempted tackles to score under the posts, a fitting reward for his nonstop work rate and ball carrying all game. A lovely backs move saw Adam Thomas cut inside and score a fine try late on, with Burr converting two of the tries the score moved to Ruislip 8 – 46. Brentwood had the opportunities to extend their lead late on but a lack of precision hampered their efforts, something they’ll need to work on for next week’s visit of Fullerians to King Georges.

A comfortable win for Brentwood in what could have been a tricky fixture. Again, strong organised defence and the work rate of forwards laid the foundation for the backs to show what they can do. Brentwood looked dangerous with every attack and probably could have score many more tries but a 5 point away win is exactly what was needed and extends the winning run to nine in all competitions.

The Davlav Man of the Match went to Louis Payne. Strong running and hard hitting in defence topped off by a great try. Fullerians visit King Georges next week 9th December.

Brentwood Team: Visser, Richards, Payne, Woodcock, Killington, Amato, Vogel, Whaley, White, Burr, Wilkinson, Bird, Stannard, Hornby Subs: Garnett, Thomas, Pollinger
