Brentwood extend their long unbeaten run

On a wet, windy day and ground conditions forcing the home side to use the 2nd team pitch Brentwood blew away the cobwebs from a 3 week break. Conditions were difficult but Brentwood dominated for most of the game to score 13 tries and stay top of the league.

A strong start saw tries from Ed Hornby and Ben Amato, one from a free flowing backs move and the other from a strong 5 metre scrum. The pattern of the match was set early on and further tries came from George Bassenger, Charlie Wilkinson & Billy Aldous as Brentwood put together a fantastic 15 minutes of rugby. A scrappy end to the half saw handling become more difficult in the wet conditions but Josh Stannard broke from his own 22 to score a nice individual try, followed by Hornby doubling his try tally late on. Brentwood led 50-0 at half time but had the slope against them for the second half.

A sluggish start to the second half saw Saffron Walden put together some nice rugby and score a deserved try in the corner and this was followed by a disjointed 15 minutes where neither team got the upper hand. The conditions were a factor but Brentwood went away from their structure that has served them well all season played some loose rugby. They tightened everything up for the final 20 minutes however when James Killington broke through and scored under the posts. Another good move was then finished off by Billy Aldous closely followed by James White getting on the scoresheet. The backs then got in on the act when Josh Stannard and Chay Pollinger finished nicely to score the 12th & 13th tries of the match. Bradley Burr converting 9 of the tries to take the score to 83 – 7.

Stronger opposition await next week, greater concentration for the whole 80 minutes will be needed to get the win against a strong North Walsham side sitting comfortably in mid table.

Brentwood Team: Visser, Payne, Bevans-Royson, Whaley, Killington, Amato, Aldous, Bassenger, White, Burr, Hornby, Thomas, Stannard, Simpson, Chambers Subs: Richards, Bradley, Pollinger
