Late try denies Brentwood after great away performance

Brentwood made the trip to Kent shorn of a few 1st team regulars but confident that they could continue their good start to the season. They should have made the trip home with win safely tucked away but a strong final quarter from the hosts meant they took 2 points home and not the 4 that looked likely late in the game. Tom Lucas-Roast replaced the unavailable Bradley Burr and Henry Galligan started on the wing in place of the injured Ed Hornby, both had great games and show the strength in depth that Brentwood have to choose from.

Brentwood started strongly and dominated their hosts with multiple phases through forwards and backs but a penalty infringement gave Sidcup a chance to clear their lines. Fantastic defence gave Brentwood turnover ball, good hands in the backs put Tom Simpson clear and he fed Adam Thomas with a lovely pass who scored his third try in 4 games, the conversion was missed and Brentwood led 5-0 after 10 minutes. Sidcup couldn't get a foothold in the match and should have been further behind but a kickable penalty was missed on 14 minutes. The hosts managed to get on the scoresheet with 2 quickfire penalties and took a narrow 6-5 led heading into halftime, the difference between the two sides was on display again as Brentwood put together another multiphase move which ended with Henry Galligan touching down in the corner, again the kick was missed but Bentwood went into the break with a 11-6 lead.

Sidcup upped their game for the first 10 minutes of the second half and scored a well worked try and conversion to take the lead back 13 - 10 but they couldn't build any sustained pressure on their visitors. Brentwood were playing the better rugby and Ben Patterson finished a strong rolling maul on 65 minutes, Lucas-Roast converted and Brentwood again took the lead. Patterson went close soon after but was held up over the line and when Brentwood won a penalty from the proceeding scrum Lucas-Roast again split the uprights to put Brentwood 7 points clear with 13 minutes to play. Unfortunately a couple of handling errors and a harsh yellow card for Adam Thomas meant they were under constant pressure for the last 10 minutes. They held out until the 78th minute when the Sidcup scrum scored a pushover try and their kicker coolly slotted over the conversion to draw the game.

Another game that confirms that Brentwood can be competitive in the league this year and one that Brentwood should have won. Sidcup were powerful upfront and put pressure on Brentwood's scrum all game, despite this Brentwood dominated the game for large periods and with a little more precision in the second half would have won this game comfortably.

Man of the Match went to Ben Amato, fantastic defence and attack and led by example all game.
