End of Season Report for Brentwwod Rugby Club 1st XV

By David Anderson

After a season of many highs and lows Brentwood survived their second year in Level 6 rugby. Director of Rugby Steve Killington had a difficult season, starting with a very small squad wich suffered increasingly with a series of injuries to key players. Winning nine out of twenty six games, experience on the home pitch proved invaluable in avoiding relegation. Seven home wins provided the majority of the points, with notable wins against Chingford and Sidcup. Controversial refereeing decisions against Woodford and Letchworth cost the club eight points and two place in the league.

With a mixture of experience and raw youth, Captain Tom King led his team to a dramatic final stage of the league where wins against Woodford and Ruislip provided sufficient points to reach a safe tenth position in the league.

At the recent club supper number eight Chris Holden deservedly received the player of the season trophy, while Ben Amato was awarded the cup for the most improved player of the season. Both awards were judged by the clubs coaching staff. There was also a special thanks from from the supporters to the spirit and endeavour shown by the squad throughout the season.

The 2011/12 season will show five changes to the league. Westcliff are promoted while Sidcup move across to London 1 South. Stevenage, Woodford and Tabard are relegated. Up from London 2 N.E come old rivals Rochford and Braintree. From London 2 N.W Hammersmith & Fulham are promoted. Down from National League 3 London & S.E are the Norfolk clubs North Walsham and Diss. The league standard next season will certainly be as strong as the 2010/11 season and the travelling will be much longer.

Steve Killington has started his search for additional squad members, looking especially for experienced backs. Much will depend on the level of sponsorship available. Players of all abilities should contact Steve on 07771 926151 . Calls from sponsors will also be most welcome.

On a Mini and Youth level Brentwood, with six hundred players remain one of East Anglias premier clubs. The youngsters new season starts at the beginning of September. Newcomers are especially welcome.

Training for senior players starts on Tuesday 14th June at 7:30pm and thereafter on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
