Please read below the eulogy for John Fowley written by Tim Pembroke, his Brother In Law.
It is with great sadness that we would like to inform the Club of the sad passing of John Fowley on 2nd September in his home town of Christchurch, New Zealand. John had battled his illness over the previous twelve months with all the strength of his hero Willie John McBride following the infamous Lions 99 call.
John was an integral member of the Club during the 90’s and regularly played for the 1st team as well as being a regular and legendary tourist. There are many stories of John’s exploits on tour which can only be mentioned over a beer. Indeed, there were rumours that he was sponsored by Heineken for many years. His regular use of the phrase ‘you can trust me - I’m a plumber’ provided much success during his touring days.
John’s funeral took place at St.Bede’s School with over 300 people in attendance which was a testament to the high regard he was held in rugby, work and wider community circles.
A memorial mass will be held at St. Joseph’s RC Church in Upminster at 6.30pm on Friday 12th December followed by a reception at Sacred Heart Convent School, St Mary’s Lane, Upminster, Essex, RM14 2QR.
