Jon Mills - 30-11-1968 – 3-5-2024

It is with regret to announce the sad passing of Jon, and our sympathy goes out to his family, partner and friends.

He will be sadly missed by all those at Brentwood RFC whom he became associated with.

Jon had a simple philosophy in that wherever he was posted for work “Join a Rugby Club and you would have 15 new friends within a few weeks” and he applied this to full.

He attended Wolverhampton grammar school where he was selected for 1st team at football & cricket (no rugby played) at the age of 14, whilst playing for the local rugby club at weekends from U7 to Colts and was selected for 1st team at 17.

After obtaining a degree at Leeds University in Physical Education & Business Management in 1991 he was appointed fitness manager at Basingstoke Health a Rackets club joining the local rugby club to train midweek and returning to play for Wolverhampton at the weekends.

When in 1992 - 96 Bedford Council appointed Jon as the Group fitness manager for all their gyms, he joined Bedford Swifts who were promoted 3 times during his tenure as player coach.

He stayed a further 2 years at the club when he was employed by Maude Sports to promote their sales of sports equipment, which he achieved from £0 to £1 million during this period.

In 1998-2008 he moved to Folkstone when appointed MD of Sothys UK (French skin care company) where he played for the 1st team for the local club except for 1 year when he joined Canterbury.

In 2008-2011 he was appointed Sales manager of La Beeby Ltd (specialised clothing for beauty salons) and joining Mosborough RFC where he was promoted to 1st team within 3 weeks.

When in 2011 he was again head hunted to became General Manager of Eye Lash Design Company that resulted him moving to Brentwood and contacting the Vets team after viewing the Brentwood RFC’s website.

Jon also played for 2nd & 3rd teams when the opportunity arose and when not playing, he supported the club by being a fully paid-up member attending events and watching the 1st team.

He also excelled at golf with a 13 handicap and cricket where he played for Brookweald 1st team.

He always made a lasting impression on all those he met not only though his personality but also his dapper dress style.

Unfortunately, he was rushed into Southend Hospital in January 2023 where he was diagnosed with cancer. He only temporarily responded to treatment, and when informed that it was incurable a year ago, he made a momentous decision not to continue with Chemotherapy and to enjoy a quality of life whist he could.

This he did by scoring 110 in a cricket match for his club that ended up being his last game, which partly resulted in his being interviewed on Test Match Special during the Lords Ashes test, playing golf on prestigious courses in Spain with his family and travelling around England to catch up with friends & family.

His last company Professional Beauty Systems Ltd where Jon operated as Global Sales Manager deserves recognition for the support they displayed by continuing his salary throughout this process.

Brentwood RFC express their condolences to his Mother Gerry, Sister Kate, Brothers David & Jim (twin) and partner Sharon. Jon will be sorely missed by all those he extended friendship.
