Brentwood U9s travelled to a sunny Braintree for the Essex Festival on Sunday. In what was a very tough group the boys faced a well drilled Westcliff team in their first fixture. Following an excellent opening try from Archie the boys found themselves 3 - 2 behind. The referee had called last play and there followed a superb team try with most of the boys involved. Bobby Tegg kept the ball alive and following fine handling from numerous players, and a typical bulldozing run from Ted, he offloaded superbly to Angus who tip toed over a couple of defenders and sped down the touchline, outpacing the covering defence.
Final Score: Westcliff 3 - 3 Brentwood
Next up were Billericay RFC who Brentwood had never played before. Despite Billericay putting up a strong performance with much determination and spirited tackling Brentwood eventually ran out winners.
Final score: Billericay 1 - 4 Brentwood
The third fixture was against local rivals Old Brentwoods RFC and the boys were rightly informed that local bragging rights were at stake. In a very closely contested game Brentwood again ran out winners with 3 excellent tries from Josh and Fred (2)
Final score Old B's 0 - 3 Brentwood.
The boys final group game was a must win if they were to progress to the semi finals. Despite valiant defence and great determination the boys were overrun by an excellent Upminster team who deservedly ran out winners.
Final score Upminster 4 - 0 Brentwood
All in all, a most satisfying performance with notable performances from all the boys. Braintree hosted a superb festival which was played in an excellent spirit by all the teams present. Thanks for all the support from the parents who cheered the boys on throughout.
